The Malay World, also known as 'Nusantara,' encompasses a rich tapestry of diverse cultures, traditions, and religions that have shaped the identity of its inhabitants over centuries. Among the myriad influences, Islam stands as a dominant force, intricately woven into the fabric of Malay society, influencing every aspect of life and culture. Recognizing the significance of studying this dynamic interplay, the International Conference on Islam in Malay World (ICON-IMAD) serves as a pivotal platform for researchers worldwide to delve into the complexities of the Malay-Islamic heritage and its contemporary relevance
The inception of ICON-IMAD traces back to the success of its inaugural conference, ICON-IMAD I, held in Bandung in November 2011. Since then, the conference has evolved into a biennial event, gathering scholars, experts, and practitioners to deliberate on pressing issues facing the Malay World. ICON-IMAD II continued the tradition at APIUM in 2012, followed by ICON-IMAD III in Bandung in 2013.
Subsequent editions, including ICON-IMAD IV in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, ICON-IMAD V in Pattani, Thailand, and ICON-IMAD VI in Brunei, further cemented the conference's reputation as a premier forum for interdisciplinary discourse on Islam in the Malay context. ICON-IMAD VII in Garut and ICON-IMAD VIII in Langkawi continued to attract participants, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange.
In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, ICON-IMAD X in 2021 adapted to virtual formats, demonstrating resilience and adaptability in the face of unprecedented challenges. Despite the constraints, the conference remained a catalyst for intellectual exchange and cooperation.
The most recent installment, ICON-IMAD XII, held at ADYA Hotel in Langkawi, Malaysia, reaffirmed the conference's commitment to addressing regional humanitarian crises. With the theme "Tradisi Islam Melayu Mendepani Krisis Kemanusiaan Serantau" (Islam-Malay Tradition Facing the Regional Crisis of Humanities), the conference underscored the urgency of collective action and scholarly engagement in tackling contemporary challenges.
By convening experts from diverse backgrounds and regions, ICON-IMAD XII facilitated dialogue, fostered innovative solutions, and strengthened regional cooperation. The conference serves as a testament to the enduring relevance of the Malay-Islamic heritage in navigating the complexities of the modern world while preserving the rich tapestry of traditions that define the Malay World.
In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the crucial role that the Islamic-Malay world plays in fostering peaceful coexistence and sustainable development. This conference aims to delve deeper into the multifaceted dimensions of this relationship, exploring how Islamic principles and Malay cultural values intersect to promote harmony, tolerance, and progress within societies.
